Ways to Reduce the Negative Effects of Sun Glare [Infographics]

Light is essential in all aspects of your life, particularly your health and vision. The reflection of light is what enables you to see what is around you.

With adequate lighting, you can continue with your everyday tasks, whether work or household chores. In contrast, the brightness of the light can cause visual impacts, such as glare.

What is glare?

Glare occurs when the amount of light (luminance) entering the eye is higher than the amount of reflected or refracted light (illuminance) to which the eyes are adapted. For a normal-sighted person, their eyes have a peak light sensitivity of 555 nanometers (nm).

The reflected light shines directly into your eyes, which does not generally help you see more clearly and causes loss of visual performance.

There are four types of glare:

Distracting glare – Distracting glare occurs when there is high luminance in the visual environment, directly visible from a person’s position. This type of glare may cause eye fatigue and annoyance.

Discomforting glare – Discomfort glare often occurs when the eye is exposed to sudden fluctuations of light brightness. This type of glare can cause headaches and eye pain, reducing a person’s ability to see visual information needed for their activities.

Disabling glare – Disabling glare, also known as veiling glare, occurs when there is too much bright light for the eye to handle. This type of glare can significantly impair a person’s visual performance.

Blinding glare – Blinding glare occurs when light becomes polarized and forms visual noise. This type of glare can be overwhelming and often blocks vision, causing temporary blindness.

How to control and reduce the harmful effects of sun glare?

Glare can cause annoyance, headaches, eye fatigue, blurred vision, and even be strong enough to block your vision. Although you cannot completely prevent glares from occurring, particularly when the light comes from the sun, you can still reduce its negative effects.

Wear sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses with a dark tint when you are outside is an effective way to protect your eyes against the glare. Sunglasses reduce the amount of bright light entering your eyes.

Install window tints

Sun glare can be a threat when you drive, especially when the sun is directly shining on your face. It can be a danger to your safety once you are on the road. Having your car windows tinted will shield your eyes and prevent glare from different sources of harsh and blinding lights.

Moreover, you can also experience glare inside your home or office. Glare does not only affect your eye health, but it can also have an impact on your productivity and comfort levels when you are working on your computer or doing other household activities and chores.

Installing window tints on your household windows can help reduce the sun’s glare and prevent any discomfort it may cause.
