Penalties
Following the policies for window tint, non-compliance to these regulations is punishable by law. The police and Driver and Vehicles Standard Agency (DVSA) can measure your window darkness with a photometer.
If you use extreme tint darkness, you will likely be issued an EFPN or Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notice. This will result in your driver’s license being endorsed with 3 points. Getting an EFPN will also require you to pay a £60 fine.
A delayed prohibition notice (DPN) or offence rectification notice (ORN) may also be issued to drivers with window tints that allow 30% of light to pass but are not legal. When given either of these notices, you will be allowed to drive your car for up to 10 days, so long as you remove all non-legal tints and provide sufficient proof to the police.
Lastly, illegal car window tints on front windshields and front side windows can result in an immediate prohibition notice. Receiving this notice means you must stop using the vehicle until it complies with the UK window tint laws. Conversely, ignoring this prohibition is a serious offence, and you will likely be prosecuted for driving a non-roadworthy car. You may also receive a penalty notice or court summons, incurring additional costs.
